Y'know -- another suggestion here for something to consider as possible group canon is the QMX Serenity Blueprints book. It's a bit spendy ($35) and it's oversized, but it is really pretty darn cool and would give us an in-depth visual standard for the ship.

omg, that's pretty! $35 is steep, but probably not unreasonable from what it looks like you get.
Then I would insist that we are indeed going to stick with a firefly class ship. :lol: Just so I can use all those pretty refs.

Yeah, I think we're sticking with the Firefly! We can always "trade up" to another ship in the future if we want to expand.

Yeah, those blueprints are nice. Too bad they don't come in a digital version.

Re time and calendars, I like the idea that when the original colonists left Earth-that-was, they carried the actual atomic clocks from the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (there are currently over 200, distributed in over 50 national labs) and those units are now enshrined at various universities, ports, and capitals across the 'verse. After all, you need some sort of synchronized time system for interworld commercial and scientific activities, as well as accurate positioning systems (think GPS, but across the whole 'verse)

Given that, it makes sense to continue the Earth-that-was calendar for official use, including shipboard. Besides, it probably prevented a pitched battle between the bureaucracies of Londinium and Sihnon about whose year to use. ;-}

I wonder if some large ports run their office staffing shifts according to that calendar instead of their actual day/night, to match the "daytime" that ship crews are used to?

And I'm fine with starting in 2514, as long as we don't insist on following the calendar in realtime.

Oh, and a few other worldbuilding thoughts to float past you all:

I'd like to say that Shadow, while largely a farming/ranching sort of world, also had some big cities and a high-tech industrial base, possibly due to an abundance of strategic minerals in certain locations. Hopefully that won't interfere too much with people's ideas of the place; it's nearly as large as the Earth, so a few large industrial areas would barely be blips on the map, and wouldn't affect the climate or atmosphere much.

Without at least one high-tech world, the Independents wouldn't have had a prayer of winning the war. I'm assuming there were some others as well -- lots of big worlds out there, after all -- but I'd like to say that Shadow was the most important to the Independent cause (especially after the Alliance captured Boros early in the war.) I'd also like to say that the place was in many ways the political center if the Independent movement, as much as there was a center anyway. That plus the tech industry would explain why the Alliance chose to destroy Shadow so thoroughly.

It's canon that Shadow is pretty much uninhabitable, despite the fact that doing that to an entire world would take a ridiculous amount of firepower, even with nukes. In my old campaign, I explained that by saying the Alliance used a never-before-seen weapon: twelve cruisers surrounded the planet in a carefully aligned pattern, deployed some kind of device whose nature is still top secret, and the entire planetary atmosphere ignited. This would be the same sort of scientific quantum leap as atomics in WWII. Between that and the defeat of so much of the Independent military in Serenity Valley, there was no hope of continuing the war.

Any objections to any of this? I won't pitch a fit if people are deeply attached to the idea of Shadow as a completely backwater agrarian world, but please let me know!
